This is a bespoke four bedroom contemporary remodelled home in Essex specifically designed to meet a young special needs (paraplegic)client and her family. Before embarking on this project we considered new build versus extending and substantially remodelling the existing residential chalet style property. This exercise when costed showed that it was more economic to remodel.
The family required the home to be fully accessible for wheelchair use, but split to provide separate selfcontained accomodation for their daughter and first floor full time carer's bed and ensuite. The ground floor area for the daughter comprised, specially designed accessible kitchen, dining and lounge opening out to the garden area with raised decking. The assisted wetroom and bedroom are designed with pair and half doors and overhead hoisting is provided throughout.Daylight into the extended plan has been introduced through new rooflights. The interiors have been designed to provide finishes and coloured LED lighting effects tailored to suit the daughter's requirements. The existing house was radically altered with a large extension on the ground floor, benefiting from the south facing aspect of the garden. The challenge was to create self contained spaces for both the family and daughter to use independentyly and together when required. The main family element introduced their own large bespoke open plan kitchen dining area and self contained lounge with privacy to the garden retained. A generator was sited at the bottonm of the garden to maintain essential backup electricty supply for ventilators. The client has stated that the finished project has transformed their lives and as a result they are enjoying the benefits of the new design
